Private Samuel Wallace

 

It is probable that this North Irish Horseman was the Samuel Wallace born on 6 July 1895 at Kilnacolpagh, near Broughshane, County Antrim, the second of eight children of farmer Robert Wallace and his wife Margaret (née McCullough). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Kilnacolpagh with his parents and six surviving siblings.

Wallace enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 16 and 22 June 1916 (regimental number between 2190 and 2205).

At the end of December 1916 he was one of forty North Irish Horsemen who volunteered to transfer to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The formal transfer took place on 9 January 1917, and on the same day they embarked for France, where they were posted to the 10th Battalion, joining it at Ploegsteert Wood on the Ypres front on 16 January. Wallace was issued regimental number 40669.

Wallace was wounded in 1917 during Third Ypres, most likely on 16 August at the Battle of Langemarck. He was wounded a second time between August and October 1918 during the Advance to Victory offensive.
